CRESCENT CHOIR
A choral project led by Sophia Corinne, bringing original music by local artists to life.
Rooted in the Asheville area, Crescent Choir brings skilled musicians and experienced singers together to make ambitious new work. The project is made up of two interconnected ensembles: Crescent Choir, a larger mixed-voice choir, and Moon Choir, a small femme-centered ensemble that grows out of the full group. Together, they form a single artistic container devoted to collaboration, rigorous listening and music-making, sharing carefully shaped work through live performance.
ACCEPTING AUDITIONS AND SONG SUBMISSIONS: March 3rd-March 24th
UPCOMING SPRING SEASON: May 4th - June 29th, 2026.
THE ENSEMBLES
CRESCENT CHOIR
A larger mixed-voice ensemble open to singers of all genders. All participants rehearse weekly as part of Crescent Choir, working on original repertoire arranged for the group. Returning members do not re-audition each season but are asked to confirm their participation; brief vocal check-ins may be scheduled as needed to support part placement and ensemble balance.
MOON CHOIR
A smaller, femme-centered ensemble (trans inclusive) drawn from Crescent Choir based on musical fit and balance needs. It focuses on music that benefits from intimacy, clarity, and lighter or higher vocal textures. Moon Choir is thoughtfully re-cast each season, and all singers — including returning members — participate in the seasonal audition process.
HOW IT WORKS
Crescent Choir operates in focused, seasonal cycles. Each season centers a small selection of original music by local artists, arranged for the ensemble and developed over an 8-week rehearsal process.
Rehearsals emphasize close listening, musical precision, and collective responsibility. Through shared practices such as solfège warmups, we build a common musical language that supports both song-based and experimental music. The creative process is approached with care and rigor, making space for both depth and joy as the work takes shape.
All singers rehearse together, with Moon Choir emerging from the full group for select repertoire.
Each season culminates in a live performance, offering the music back to the community it came from.
WORKING WITH SONGWRITERS
Our repertoire is drawn from original work by local songwriters, bands and composers. Selected pieces are arranged by Sophia Corinne in collaboration with the songwriter, shaping each work for the specific voices and ensemble performing it. This process is approached as a dialogue, honoring the original material while adapting it for collective, embodied performance.
When a song is selected, the writer becomes part of the artistic process — not just the program.
To support both community depth and artistic expansion, we offer two pathways for participating as a songwriter:
SONGWRITER ENSEMBLE MEMBER (Primary Path)
If your song is selected, you are expected to:
-Audition to sing in the choir
-Participate as a full ensemble member for the season
-Attend weekly rehearsals
-Perform in the final concerts
We believe the strongest musical culture happens when writers are embedded in the ensemble — singing each other’s work and shaping it from within.
This is the standard pathway for selected songwriters.
GUEST COMPOSER (Limited & Curated)
Each season, we may feature a limited number of Guest Composers.
These placements are limited and curated.
Guest Composers are expected to:
-Attend select rehearsals
-Participate in the final performances
-Engage in collaborative and promotional efforts around the project
This track allows for occasional collaboration beyond our immediate ensemble.
This pathway is reserved for:
-Established or nationally recognized songwriters
-Artists with significant touring or recording commitments
-Composers whose involvement meaningfully expands the artistic scope of the project
ACCESS & PARTICIPATION
TIME & COMMITMENT
Crescent Choir is an auditioned ensemble with a defined seasonal commitment. We’re looking for singers who are able to show up consistently and engage fully in the process. Singers commit to weekly rehearsals over an 8-week season, as well as the final performance. Because the work builds collectively over time, regular attendance is essential.
